Garage Door Springs
Garage Door Springs
Garage door springs play a huge role in opening and closing your garage door. They do that by countering the effect of gravity on the heavy garage door. As a result, the process of manually or mechanically opening or closing the garage door becomes so much smoother. To help reduce the weight of the garage door, the springs are kept under constant tension.
The constant tension might be necessary, but after a while, it’s going to wear the springs down. At that point, you don’t have any other choice but to seek the help of a highly competent garage door company. If you live in Louisville or the surrounding area, you can contact our team at Bluegrass Garage Doors. We can diagnose and solve whatever garage door spring issues you might be experiencing.
About Garage Door Springs
There are two types of garage door springs. They are torsion springs and extension springs.

Torsion Springs
Torsion springs are mounted at the top of the door and a metal tube runs through the center that has drums on the sides of the tubing. Every time the garage door is closed, the drums will move with the cables that are attached to the bottom of the door so the springs will wind back up and create stored energy. When the door is opened, the springs unwind to release the energy. As the door rolls to the open position and the spring unwinds, the power and tension are lost.
How to tell if your door’s torsion spring is already failing? One sure sign is when the door’s no longer staying in place when being opened or closed. The spring would need to be rebalanced to make sure that it’s in the right position to carry the weight of the door.
What they say
Extension Springs
Extension springs are mounted horizontally from the back to the front of the garage door track. They pull the garage door upwards against the pull of gravity to support the door’s weight. This is made possible by a pulley system, which allows the springs to stretch when the garage door closes. The garage door gradually closes instead of suddenly slamming.
A visual inspection can help tell you if your door’s extension spring is already in need of a replacement. If you see that there are gaps within the cols, then that is a sure sign that the spring is weakened and requires either repair or replacement.
